The retreat is
held annually at the Alaska Wildland Adventures Lodge
on the banks of the Kenai River in Cooper Landing. Each day includes group sessions where
the men have opportunities to share their prostate cancer stories and learn
from each other’s experiences. There are also opportunities to go fishing, rafting or hiking on Saturday morning of the retreat weekend.
Participants vary in experience from men who
were recently diagnosed, to those who have been dealing with the disease for many
years. This retreat is so wildly successful that it is has become an annual
event sponsored by the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium , State of Alaska Comprehensive Cancer Programs, the Alaska Regional
Hospital, Alpine Urology Associates, Anchorage Radiation Therapy Center and
Fairbanks Memorial Hospital which joined together to present this opportunity
for prostate cancer survivors. MD’s
who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer also attend.
